Today, we spent a few hours in the wet lab making tiles of our chosen designs. The activity was rather fun. I used both white and terracotta clay. You knead them as you would with making a short sweet pastry, air bubbles must not be present. Otherwise the clay may crack during the firing stage. Then they get rolled out like a pizza base (thin and flat). Patterns and glaze can also be created and applied from this point. Then they will be placed into the 1150 degrees Celsius for firing. A chemical reaction occur during the firing, the molecular compositions of the clay change, they become much more durable.
