Hello, I am Michelle Whitworth and I design beautiful spaces.
About me
What do spatial designers do? I get asked that question all the time. I answer to people, I design spaces. That's it! I am a spatial designer who has a very strong architectural sensibility. I am fanatical about any interior, exterior or urban design. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved to daydream about how to knock down or add walls and how to fill up spaces with interesting objects. Beautifully designed and handcrafted buildings, houses and furniture always catch my eyes.
Currently, I am a second-year Spatial Design student studying at Auckland University of Technology. I sincerely love every second of it. I am very lucky to have the opportunity to go back to university for the second time in my life. Prior to this, I gained a degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Otago. I have realised how unfulfilled I was with my career path after working for many years in the pharmaceutical industry. Some people would say that it was "spontaneous", "risky" or that I "walked away from a perfect job". But at the end of the day, who cares what others think of you! They are not you. They do not run your life. You do! What is the definition of success anyway? Some people manage to secure a good job, get married, buy a house and have children all before they turn 30. Well, good for them. Some people never go to university but end up doing what they absolutely love. Rosalía Mera who was the co-founder of Zara didn't launch the brand until she was 41. My point is, that we are all unique in our own way and live our lives according to our own timetable. Let's not compare ourselves to others and be disappointed. Treasure what we have and celebrate life.
Being a mature student has both pros and cons. I love the fact that I am more focused, better able to manage time and multi-task than ever. My work experience provided me with a great deal of confidence, team spirit and organisational skills. On the flip side of things, studying full-time, working part-time and being a mum to a 7-year-old can be challenging. Every now and then, when things get out of hand a bit, I tell myself that, this is the path to my dream. Sometimes, we may need to take 3 steps back before moving 5 step further.
Where possible I practice wise sustainability. I try to do my part in keeping our planet (or at least my house!), clean and green. Reuse, reduce and recycle. I believe that little things can make a big impact, so I always look for opportunities to use and reuse materials, water and energy efficient resources wisely in our studio and in our own lives.
My last words: Remember a good cup of coffee fixes a lot of problems! Yes, I am a coffee junkie!
