Further to the textile design, this week we had the opportunity to design tile patterns. It was quite a fascinating experience. I carried on with my artist models and colour selections. Furthermore, I have also researched on different types of tiles on the market. There are ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, mosaic tiles which were first laid by the Ancient Greeks and Romans, cement tiles and of course natural stones tiles such as marbles.
I have come up with the following 6 tile designs, the can either be used on the floors or walls or out doors. Ideally, the first and third tile would be made of natural stones to thoroughly represent the patterns. All tiles can either be 600mm x 600mm or smaller. Wall tiles are usually smaller than floor tiles.
How do I come up with these designs? My chosen artist Giorgio Morandi spent his entire life making still life paintings and screen etching. I recently completed two books written about his approaches in painting, his personal life and interviews with him. These reading has provided incredible resource for me to understand him as a painter, a teacher and an artist. Morandi's still life paintings instruct me how to look into everyday objects, by looking in a way which they demand d I enter a state of contemplation in which the speed of my gaze is forced to slow down. Morandi's art manipulate me to look beyond the demands of the eye of instinct. When this happens, I experience a different dimensions of time and space. I also find that through reaseraches of Morandi's work, model making and drawings. I see objects inwardly rather than they are what they appear to be. For example, a milk bottle from his painting serve not only being a common house hold item, but also creates an optical effect of dust, light and tonal shifts. I organise several models of mine by placing them on the same spot at different time of the day. Lighting plays huge part in my drawings. Everything in our world is of this world except light. It is the presence of the universe in our daily life. Time is a great sculptor of life in my opinion. I have chosen the shapes of my previous models and duplicated them by overlapping, collaging, mirror imaging on photoshop to create desired patterns, saturations and hues. The colours used in these tiles are from Morandi's still life paintings, also from previous textile designs. The tiles and textiles complement each other well. Below are my attempted tiles designs.
